Here's a sneak peek at one of my new pieces for Co-LAb Gallery's one-year anniversary show, Hey Ladies. The show opens next Saturday, February 27th 7–10pm. So if you're in the LA area, stop by!

Co-LAb Gallery Now Has An Online Shop!

A little over a month ago, the Spring Fling group show at Co-LAb Gallery opened. It's been such an honor to be a part of a fantastic show with other wonderful & amazing artists. A few weeks ago, Co-LAb launched their online shop. You can now get your hands on some of my originals from that show from their new online shop! (including the ones seen below) Of course, if you live in the LA area, you can stop in and see them in-person.

This skipping CD player is for the upcoming 90s Nostalgia show hosted by A Little Known Shop. I will have a table at the event along with some great local artists. I hope to see you there!

Doggie Wonderland

Join me this Saturday May 10th at Doggie Wonderland: An Art Benefit for Ken-Mar Rescue, presented by Leanna Lin's Wonderland & Supahcute.

Doggie Wonderland “Fun Adventures with Your Best Friend” is a “cash and carry” show with artwork and products all priced at $100 and lower. The show will open with a reception at Leanna Lin’s Wonderland on Saturday, May 10 (6-10pm). All proceeds from this group art exhibition and benefit will be donated to Ken-Mar Rescue, a Los Angeles-based nonprofit small dog rescue.

Hang in There

Last Saturday, Flock Shop celebrated their 5yr Anniversary with their last art exhibition titled "Bright Future". They had recently announced that they will be closing shop in January 2013, which makes me really sad. They have been really supportive of my work since the beginning and they were one of my first stockists, and I'm sorry to see them go. But on a happy note, they plan on keeping their online store open and plan on working out some possible pop-up shops.

Stop by and check out the show including work by Jared Andrew Schorr, Jesse Tise, Patrick Hruby, Owlo, Joey Chou, APAK, Linda Kim, and Kevin Chan (as seen below).

Afterwards, we dropped by Q Pop for the Tokusatsu show. The show was absolutely amazing, but unfortunately couldn't take any pictures. The show is up now until September 30th, so check it out while you still can. Of course, while I was there I had to pick up something by Minifanfan. This time, it was this sweet pack of stickers.

Everything about Minifanfan's work reminds me of the work I want to be doing. Things that are fun, quirky, and light-hearted. This upcoming Wednesday will be my last day working at Richer Poorer. And I'm leaving with nothing else lined up and with no real plan ahead. I'm going to be using this time to rebuild my Etsy shop, work on new work, make new things, and just be. It's a very exciting but scary time. I'm applying for both Renegade SF and Unique LA this year; wish me luck! So keep checking in to see what I'm up to next.

Make Me Up, Warhol!

I've always loved François Nars' vision of makeup. He really treats makeup like an art, never to be taken too seriously but never clownish either. For years, everyone has raved about NARS cosmetics' blush in Orgasm; and I actually do use it myself. NARS to some may sound totally overhyped but after working in cosmetics and trying almost every brand on the planet, they're still one of my favorites out there. So I thought it was absolutely perfect that they decided to pay tribute to Andy Warhol. Just the way they designed these eyeshadow trios with Warhol's face shows their love for art and also reflects Warhol's screen-printed mass production of art. Word has it there's a 29-piece collection on the way!

OH MY GLOB! SO FLIPPIN' AWESOME!

Over the weekend, OOOTOPIA: AN ARTGEBRAIC TRIBUTE TO ADVENTURE TIME opened over at Gallery Nucleus. Much like many of their other tribute shows to pop culture favorites, the line to get in was ridiculously long. It stretched around the corner to the end of the bank parking lot.

Party Animals by Sean Chao

I'm a super huge fan of Sean Chao's work. You've probably seen his work several times on this blog. I'm always amazed by how small he's able to work and I love how he creates these little enclosed environments.

I don't want to spoil the fun. You'll just have to see the rest yourself! So if you haven't had a chance to check out the show or just wanted to avoid the opening night crowd, the show's up until Sunday September 9th!

Beatlemania Comes to Nucleus

On Saturday, All Together Now: A Tribute to the Beatles opened at Gallery Nucleus to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of The Beatles. The festivities included some Beatles-themed desserts, a yellow submarine cut-out photo op, and a Beatles cover band. And if you were lucky enough to be there at the right time, you might have spotted Sir Ian McKellen. The show took up both the main gallery and the small atrium gallery on the second floor. Over 50 artists contributed pieces interpreting some of their favorite songs (the most popular being Lucy and the Sky with Diamonds) while others relived Beatlemania. Here's a brief glimpse at some of my favorite pieces and the illustrious life of the fab four.

I love seeing evolution charts and timelines. Andy Ristaino shows us the joy of Beatles wardrobe changes.

This next piece by Stephen Silver depicts just how I would have imagined Beatlemania in Japan.

I've alway been a fan of Scott C. but I especially love this super elongated shoeless piece. And if you love Scott C. too, prints of  of this piece are available so you can have this hanging in your home for an affordable $30.

And of course you can't have 60s Mod without Shag. He did this awesome purple number and there's silkscreened limited edition prints available for pre-order.

So if you're a Beatles fan, this is a fun show to check out. It's up now until July 29th.

Super Late to the Supahcute Dream Team Show

Amidst all the craziness of the final weeks of my college career, I totally missed the opening reception for the Supahcute Dream Team Show at Leanna Lin's Wonderland. The show was curated by my friend Hana Kim of Supahcute.com and featured some of my friends & favorite people: Michelle Romo (CROWDED TEETH), Genevieve Santos (Le Petit Elefant), Melissa Contreras (Axelhoney), Martin Hsu…just to name a few. But the entire lineup was totally amazing! After recovering from the final semester, I finally got a chance to check out the show.

Here are a few of my favorite pieces:

The above are pieces by Hiné Mizushima. I love the way she works with felt and her pieces are always whimsical.

Like Hiné, Yoko Nomura also makes awesome felt sculptures. Yoko's focuses more on the shenanigans of forest friends.

I love this deer guy by Gary Ham mostly because it feels very Amanda Visell-esque.

But this guy was my absolute favorite. He looks slightly sad and indifferent, but at least he does it in style.

All the pieces in the show can be viewed online over at Leanna's blog. The show is still up until June 24th.

So Much Seuss

It's been Dr. Seuss overload for the past few days. Just two days ago, it was Dr. Seuss' birthday which is also labelled as National Read Across America Day. And on Friday, The Lorax hit theaters nationwide. As if there wasn't enough Seuss going around, Gallery Nucleus opened their Dr. Seuss Tribute Show Look at This, Look at That last night.

Just hours before the show opened, my friend Zane Yarbrough was finishing up the Lorax-themed wall.

I just love Joey Chou and within the last year, things have been blowing up for him. I first met him when he had a small little solo show at Flock Shop. Then I heard the big news that he was asked to be the illustrator for It's a Small World, although he already had a day job at Nickelodeon. And then came the subsequent shows at Gallery Nucleus, Giant Robot, and Leanna Lin's Wonderland. Things don't seem to be slowing down at all for him and I'm happy that he's getting a lot of attention because his work is pretty awesome.

Mall(May Ann Licudine) is another artist who I absolutely love no matter what she does. She lives in the Philippines where she makes most of her living off of doing commissioned pieces. She started off doing super vibrant & super detailed illustrations and recently started transitioning into these mixed media/3D pieces. You can see this lovely piece in progress over at her blog as well as her other piece in the show.

If you're in the area, I definitely recommend checking out the show. It's up until March 24th.

It's a Small World!

Back in late July/early August, I was invited by Joey Chou to contribute to the It's a Small World show.  I met Joey one night when I was stopping by Flock Shop to drop off some new items on consignment. It just so happened that it was the same night as the opening of his solo show.  We struck up a conversation about Comic Con and cats, and how much we love Mary Blair...and the next thing I knew, I was invited to take part in this show.

Well, that show is finally here! I stopped by Gallery Nucleus yesterday, and all the pieces look amazing. You'll just have to see for yourself in person.

The Opening Reception is tonight from 7PM–10PM

Timed with the release of illustrator Joey Chou's latest children's book from Disney Press, a select group of talent will contribute work paying homage to this beloved and enduring theme of global peace. The book features Chou's illustrations interpreting the Sherman Brothers classic song written for the popular Disney park attraction.

This is an all-ages event. Meet some of the artists including Joey Chou who will be on hand signing copies of the new release.

7pm-8:30pm: Joey Chou Book Signing

8pm: First Raffle Drawing - Signed copy of Joey's book and a new print from Seb Mesnard!

8:30pm: Patrick Awa, Israel Sanchez and Joey Chou start live painting demos.
